NSU releases top two football coaches

Northern State is looking for new coaches and more wins for its football program.
Head coach Chris Boden and assistant/defensive coordinator Richard Sweeney have been released from their duties at the end of the 2009 season, which is Saturday when Northern State will play Augustana College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls. It was not an easy decision for NSU officials. NSU has gone 3-18 in the past two seasons, 18-36 overall in the five years the coaches have been at NSU and 16-29 in conference play.
“They have done a great job not only for the athletic department, but the university as well,” said Northern State athletic director Bob Olson. “But it is time to take the program in another direction. Now, you can talk about wins and losses, but to me, the right term is to take the program in another direction.” Bookmark and Share

How about looking at what has happen at Northern the past Twenty years !!

Two many presidents, what is the deal.

I do not think that lends itself to any wonderful growing population on the NSU campus. or talented sports teams.

I do not think you can put all the blame on the coaching staff in any sport. Don is doiing a wonderful job, his recruiting is done else where as well as locally.

First of all, you CANNOT recruit local talent and think you are going to win. There is not enough D2 talent in the area. If you want a coach that is going to recruit local talent, that's fine. Just expect to and don't complain when you continue to lose. Most of the D2 talent either goes out of state or tries their luck at 1AA. NSU isn't even on the radar of 99% of the best athletes in the state.

Secondly, good luck to whoever takes this job. It's not a very attractive job. Think about it for a minute. If you were a very good football player being recruited by a lot of schools, would you go to NSU? Why would you go to NSU? They have a terrible football program and a reputation of losing. The program hasn't been decent since the 80's. On top of that, NSU has to recruit against way better schools with more attractive programs.

Would you go to NSU over Augie and USF that are both in Sioux Falls? (USF WILL BE in the NSIC in a couple of years) Would you go to NSU over Concordia that is in Minneapolis? Would you go to NSU over Duluth? Would you go to NSU over Mankato which is close to Soo Foo and Minneapolis? Would you go to NSU over Winona? Would you go to NSU over St. Cloud? I sure as heck wouldn't. My point is that all of the schools that I mentioned above are bigger, they are in better cities or are close to big cities. Heck, even Mary in Bismarck is more attractive than living in and going to school in Aberdeen. Aberdeen is in the middle of nowhere (3 hours to Fargo or Soo Foo), is the size of a big high school, and has a terrible football program. They are fighting an uphill battle. I would expect the best players to continue to go anywhere but NSU. Why wouldn't they?

September 2003 University of Lincoln - Corn Huskers homecoming game attendance over 68,000 people (now the stadium holds close to, if not more then 90,000.) Shortly there after that Northern State University homecoming game had an approximate attendance of 1,900. Both teams had many players from their respective home states. Quality of those players comes from personal abilities and taught ones from high school coaches. If here in SD we are currently looking at the educational preparation of freshman, perhaps they should also take into account athletic preparedness of those same freshman with the desire to continue on in sports. Husker game tickets have had sell outs for 300 consectutive games at minimum $50 a ticket, NSU tickets back then were $8 a ticket for adult. I wonder if the taking the program in another direction is about players or about turning the program into big business as it is for the surrounding states? With a new President and many other changes at NSU I am just curious as to which box they are thinking out of??? Whats the return? Will the students benefit?

HAHAH from 7:50. I've lived in Aberdeen for quite some time and in order to have a successful program in the NSIC you CANNOT recruit local talent. Unless they are legitimate. Very seldom do you find anybody in SD or ND to come to NSU and dominate like you need them to. When Coach Heupel was here all he did was find talent from JUCOs and kids from Texas, Hawaii, Cali, Florida, and all borders in between. That's why he was successful. The likes of Toby Korrodi (From Texas), Deacon Burns (Not from the area), Ronnie Cruz (not from the area), Tyrone Morgan (not from the area)... Too lazy to look to see where the rest of them were from, but my point has to be made. You have to recruit outside of a 100 mile radius to be successful in football in the NSIC. Of all the kids to come from Aberdeen, I can name 2..... Yes 2 in the last 8 years to have a signifant contribution to the program. Brian Jark, who caught a whole bunch of Boden screen passes and Charlie Johnston who tore it up with aforementioned Toby Korrodi as his QB... Think about it. Its D2 college football in the NSIC. Duluth is the reigning National Champion and they are NSIC. You can't recruit local talent, it's not good enough.

Maybe Northern's football program will recruit local players and not junior college losers.
