Roncalli controlled life on the line to help power a 20-0 win over Redfield-Doland in the Class 11B Region 1 football championship at Swisher Field Monday night.
“I'm very proud of our athletes and the effort that they put forth,” said Roncalli coach Terry Dosch. “I thought our offensive line did a great job. The kids played with a lot of vim and vigor.”
Heading into the game, it was Redfield-Doland that had been dominating foes with a powerful offensive line and a solid rushing attack. However, those qualities belonged to the Cavaliers in this matchup.
“Definitely the story of the game is, Roncalli beat us up front,” said Redfield-Doland coach Keith Gall. “That's basically the story right there. They beat us up front. Period. We're not a dynamic team. We need to be physical and we need to run the ball and we just didn't do it.”
Roncalli held the Pheasants to just 40 yards of total offense. Redfield-Doland rushed the ball 26 times and managed just 24 yards.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers ran nearly twice as many offensive plays, accumulating 203 yards rushing to go along with 125 yards passing. Again, much of the credit went to the Roncalli offensive line.
“The bottom line is our offensive line did a nice job,” Dosch said. “I just thought the kids played so hard. I'm really happy for them.”
The offensive linemen had plenty of motivation in practice this past week.
“Coach said that our offensive line needed to pick it up,” said senior lineman Brett Smid. “Our offensive line did well tonight. Coach Dosch works us hard in practice.”
Roncalli grabbed an early 3-0 lead on a Christian Cox 26-yard field goal seven minutes into the game. It turned out, that would be all the points the Cavaliers needed.
Roncalli took control with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. Brendon Hoellein scored on a short run before Cox spotted Sam Pfeiffer for a 28-yard scoring strike. Cox scored the only points of the second half on a 24-yard field goal.
Andrew Holmstrom finished with night with 71 yards rushing, 84 yards receiving and 13 yards passing.
“It was a great game, a lot of fun, a little late though,” Holmstrom said of the nearly 11 p.m. finish.
The Cavaliers came out much more focused than they did in their first playoff victory.
“We were a little disappointed last week in our play, so we really stepped it up this week,” Holmstrom said.
Roncalli, 10-0 on the season, now travels to Colton on Saturday to play unbeaten and top-ranked Tri-Valley. The game will pit the last four Class 11B state champions against each other. Roncalli won titles in 2005 and 2006, Tri-Valley in 2007 and 2008.
“Now you're getting into pretty deep water,” Dosch said. “We have a great opportunity to play the two-time defending state champions. We're just going to go and play our hearts out and see what happens.”
