A house that the city of Aberdeen had said was unlivable was demolished Friday morning.
It took less than an hour for Rosie Hubert's house at 517 First Ave. S.E. to come down. The city hired Dahme Construction to tear down the structure. The charge will be billed to Hubert, City Attorney Adam Altman said.
"Then if she doesn't pay, we assess it to the property taxes," he said.
The house was the 146th nuisance property to be torn down in Aberdeen since 2003. Of those, 113 were homes or buildings and 33 were accessory structures - such as garages or sheds, said Mike Olson, code enforcement officer. Only about 10 of the demolitions were done by the city, he said. The others were done through cooperative efforts with the property owners.
In Hubert's case, the city told her in May that her home was unsafe and that she needed to make repairs or move out for good. The home hadn't had water or sewer for several years and there were concerns with the foundation. The city gave Hubert until Oct. 30 to repair the home.
Hubert had been in negotiations with a nonprofit group to sell the property, but earlier this month, negotiations fell through and the property was put on the market. On Friday afternoon, it was still listed for $20,000.

Ye Christians have failed to help your fellow man. Shame on you sinners.
She didn't want to spend the money on repairs? I think not. I believe she couldn't afford the repairs. Get it straight. The city IS picking on the poor.
Rosie Hubert has been living comfortably in a very nice apartment for years. She couldn't sell the house & just simply didn't want to spend the money on upkeep to meet the city codes. She had been warned many times. Laws are laws & this is the consequence.
Hub City officials need to be given a copy of Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin. The founders would have found the taking of someones property and destroying it horrifying. There is plenty of things that need needs repaired in Aberdeen so does that mean that the city will start ripping up everything in sight until it fits into their standards? They worried about this house, the house out by the airport, but that old falling down church property where they want to put the library has needed a dozer for years and it is still their. City of Aberdeen please leave individuals alone and look at cleaning up more public properties first.
UNBELIEVEABLE!!! What is wrong with the city. I have walked by this home many times. Sure it looked a mess outside.. Sure it needed repairs.. I wish I could of owned it, I would of made an effort to repair it. Instead the city picks on the owner, hires a DEMO TEAM.. WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!! For the cost of the demo ya could of repaired the sewer and water..UNBELIEVEABLE
This is sad. Governments are instituted to protect property rights (among other things), not protect us from ourselves and destroy our belongings "for our own good." The Progressive moment is the enemy of Liberty This won't stop until the people of Aberdeen stand against it, but are they willing to do so? Skip a night of Monday Night Football and show up to the City Council meeting; pack the room!
Yes Aberdeen is self destructive. Tear it all down, that is your idea. Close all of the businesses that bring people to town. Choke yourself off from the rest of the world and call it progress. Aberdeen needs new blood running things and quit catering to a few loud mouths. It is a shame this house could not have been repaired but it reflects Aberdeen's mentality, if someone complains, we will close them down, tear it down or make it impossible for them to succeed. wake up Aberdeen before it is a ghost town.
The aberdeen commissioners need to pay the bill out of there own pockets! as punishment for intetionaly keeping real busineses out of aberdeen for the past 20 years!
