Done right, health care reform will ensure more people have access to quality health care and solidify the country's fiscal future, said U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

The House bill in its current form doesn't do this, said Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D. That's why she opposes the bill, which the House is expected to vote on Saturday.

Herseth Sandlin said the bill doesn't do enough in the areas of access, quality of care and cost containment. It's critical that rising health care costs are controlled, she said, and that access to health care and affordable health insurance coverage are improved.

Quality, affordable care remains out of reach for far too many South Dakotans, Herseth Sandlin said. The bill could unintentionally threaten existing access to health care in South Dakota.

She said she has serious concerns about how the House bill would affect the future of care for seniors.

Also, there are not enough deficit reduction measures, she said.

But Herseth Sandlin said she is optimistic that Congress and President Obama will reach consensus on an appropriate bill. Bookmark and Share
